Ending Slavery, A Freedom Blueprint

A Freedom Blueprint

written by Dimitrios D. Soufleris

Slavery is a subject at the core of being human. It is a matter of heart in many ways.
Although there are many detailed definitions of slavery there is always one thing that comes in mind when we are talking for the subject. The opposite of slavery. And that is freedom.
That’s why the discussion and the work about slavery always goes deep inside the core of being human. Because there the only thing that we should find is freedom.
Freedom of the individual, freedom of the society, freedom of state and countries and mostly freedom of thought.
Following this aspect we have to approach this global subject. We have to understand that the way people think about the others and for themselves makes the internal situation that can lead to the use or the acceptance of slavery. This way of thinking can also lead to the deployment of real freedom and equality for all humanity.
Are there methods that can help us to build this freedom and demolish the chains that keep some of our brothers and sisters enslaved?

In part 3.8 of this course is mentioned that: “Slavery is a legal problem but also, to a greater or lesser extent in every country, a problem of economic development, migration, gender, prejudice and corruption”.
I’m afraid that I absolutely disagree with that statement and the background point of view. Slavery is not a matter of law and a legal problem on the first place. Except if we can also reach an understanding that also murder, or rape are also first of all legal problems. Which is probably not acceptable. These great issues of humankind are problems which have to be faced and confronted with law, legislation and jurisdiction. But first of all these great problems are firstly matters of societies and civilizations.

Under the previous preconditions I conclude to the following:
1) Ending Slavery is one of the most difficult tasks that humankind faces.
2) It is very optimistic and probably unrealistic to believe that slavery will come to an end once and for ever.
3) The fight is going to last as far as there are people on this planet.
4) But the above make this subject even more serious and important. We must cope with this old daemon of human history and try to do our best. The aim is the diminishing of all types of slavery and the scaling up of slaves who become free persons.

Somebody will say after reading the ideas of the above paragraphs. What is your suggestion for eliminating slavery? What can you offer to the Freedom Blueprint? Your ideas are good (or bad, or I disagree with them etc) but what are the practical means that you suggest for fighting slavery and to earn a minimization of it and its poisonous consequences?

My answer to the last question goes as follows:

1) The problem is international. So the confrontation must be also international.
2) The problem lies in the structural development of our societies and civilizations. The differences are so big that if we do not take care about them will stay trapped in unrealistic assumptions. It is absolutely different the way a woman or a child or a person of another religion is confronted from Islam or Hinduism etc. The western ideals, based mainly on Christianity are not automatically shared by the rest of humanity.
3) The solution has to step on the common values and central patterns of the so many different societies and civilizations of our world.
4) There are notable and successful structures-organizations with valuable experience in the fight against slavery.
5) There is a serious need for coordination and cooperation between the official international organizations, NGOs, states and countries, educational institutions, religious groups etc.
6) The unity against the “enemy” must take in consideration the differentiation of humans mentality (e.g. the old woman from Mauritania who said:”I’m a good slave”).
7) Probably the creation of a new international organism as the central director/coordinator for this fight will complicate things and is going to cost in time and money – both necessary for the fight against contemporary slavery.
8) The UN is not the perfect but the most serious candidate for this role.
9) The special department of the UN that will be responsible for the antislavery global coordination has to be absolutely independent from governments and the strong well-known formations of the UN (e.g Security Council).
10) This new entity must quickly acquire a well known and recognized name, logo and sign. The best example that comes into my mind is that of UNICEF. There are also many other UN organs and special programs, funds and agencies. I believe that an international organ with the ability to be easily recognized but dedicated to the Freedom Blueprint of eliminating slavery will become an important leap forward to Ending Slavery.
11) The role that I propose may be seen according to the paradigm of a conductor and a symphonic orchestra: You need many different organs to have an orchestra. Its one and with the musician behind it contribute to the final wonderful result: the symphonic music. But all these great people are not able to give birth to that result without the conductor. Needless to say that a conductor doesn’t make the music. But all of these people are “conditio sine qua non” to have that magnificent effect. And the more rich in the number of musicians and their expertise the orchestra the more reach also the final outcome.
12) The same is going to happen with this international “Ending Slavery” formula. Different organizations, people, states, legal systems, NGOs, religious authorities etc, keeping their difference and “personal” characteristics united toward an aim which will give contemporary slaves their freedom, keep them free, help them to build free societies and independent persons.
13) Clever slogans like “different but united” or “One slave less – One more man free,” or “Today towards a world without slaves, Tomorrow towards a world without poverty (or war etc)” can help the cause.

This central structure, under the supervision of the UN must be under the rule only of the General Assembly and the General Secretariat. For two reasons: this matter concerns everybody in the international community. The general assembly is consisted from the total of today’s worldwide countries. Naturally that is the appropriate organ to confront such an international problem which is as serious as wars, killing people, poverty, violation of human rights etc.
The second reason to put this under the General Assembly is because we hope that all member states has to work for the abolition of slavery without secret agendas and political plays behind closed doors.

But in the very end the real work will be done by all the independent participants of the fight against slavery. The UN organ must not become the manager or even worse the owner of this fight against contemporary slavery. After all UN can not prove an impressive success against war, refugees crisis or poverty. Positive steps are a reality that has given some progress to our world. But there are so many unsolved big problems.

If it is a truth that Modern Slavery has a small economic and quantitative impact on today’s world and that it is possible to eliminate it then lets try some different ways from the ones that we have tried so far.
